Van Hollen for Senate Announces New Campaign Manager

Kensington, MD — Today the Van Hollen for Senate Campaign announced that Pat Murray would succeed Sheila O’Connell as campaign manager. Murray currently serves as Executive Director of the Maryland Democratic Party.

“This was a hard fought campaign, and Sheila’s work as campaign manager was integral to our success. From day one, she was focused on making sure that our staff and our grassroots army engaged voters in every corner of the state and talked about the issues that Maryland families care about. Her dedication, strategic insight, and leadership helped us build a winning coalition, and I wish her every success,” said Chris Van Hollen.

“Chris Van Hollen fights every day for the issues that are important to Maryland families — whether that’s a senior citizen who needs individual help with her Social Security or preventing a government shutdown. His record is second to none, and his plan to move Maryland forward spoke to voters in every single community across the state. It has been a honor to work with him, and I couldn’t be more proud of the work this campaign did over the last year,” said Sheila O’Connell.

“Sheila leaves big shoes to fill, but I know Pat is up to the task,” Van Hollen added. “His work as Executive Director for the Maryland Democratic Party has been top-notch. With Kathy Szeliga and Donald Trump putting big money special interests before working families at every turn, Pat knows how much is at stake in this election. We are going to fight hard for the support of Marylanders in every part of the state this fall.”

“Chris Van Hollen is the leader Maryland needs to continue Senator Mikulski’s legacy. They both know how important it is to take on national fights that impact our state and the entire country — but they never forget the neighborhoods and communities back home. Chris’s focus on growing jobs, increasing paychecks, and expanding educational and economic opportunities — and his commitment to representing the entire state — resonates with voters, and Sheila’s great work leaves the campaign in a strong position as we head into the general election,” said Pat Murray.

In addition to serving as the Executive Director of the Maryland Democratic Party, Murray has served as Director of State Affairs for Johns Hopkins University & Medicine, Deputy Chief of Staff for Maryland Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller, Jr., and Senior Policy Adviser for Maryland House of Delegates Speaker Michael E. Busch. He has previously worked on campaigns around the country, including races in Iowa, Kansas, New York, Utah, and Virginia. Murray got his undergraduate degree at Swarthmore College and his law degree from the University of Maryland School of Law.
